Description

In 1994, genocide erupted in the small, landlocked African nation of Rwanda. Within days, all foreign peacekeeping forces, embassies, and civilians evacuated the country. Over the course of 100 days, more than 800,000 Rwandans, mostly Tutsi and Tutsi sympathizers, were brutally murdered. Carl Wilkens was the only American to remain. Through courage and negotiations, often with extremist Hutu government forces, he was able to save the lives of over 500 people, many of them children.

This hyperdoc challenges students to research a difficult topic and historical event - and to then consider steps for preventing future genocides. Includes link to curriculum package for teachers.
